8.3 Marital status

While the majority of male (74%) were married, only 53% of females were. A relatively large proportion of females (37%) were widows, and only 12% of males were widowers. This pattern is similar to the overall situation in Australia as a whole, where in 1981 there were four times as many widows as widowers (Lindenmayer,1987 p 11).
