8.7 Use of Services

There was very poor utilization of special services for the aged. Only 2-8% of registrants made use of the services provided. However, up to 45% of persons indicated a present or future need for some service, particularly handiman services, home-help, provision of special meals, district nurse or help with shopping and general companionship. Moreover, when they were asked to identify any other services not specifically mentioned, their overwhelming perceived requirement was for nursing homes or special accommodation, and the need to organize social activities and outings. Interpreter services were specifically requested by 12% of registrants.
