After serving as resident house officer at St Luke's Hospital in 1967, Busuttil went to Scotland in 1969 and joined the Glasgow University's Pathology Department at the City's Western Infirmary. He conducted research in urological and intestinal malignancy and the pathology of male infertility.

Busuttil was responsible for the pathological investigations into the Lockerbie disaster in which 270 people were killed when a Pan Am airliner exploded over Scottish village in December 1988; together with his team, he carried out a full examination and autopsies of the bodies.
